Finally made it to Harlan

Postby ANDY » Tue Feb 22, 2011 10:13 am

Gary and I took my CJ to Harlan this past weekend with a group Terry put together. We had a blast. The weather was perfect and the trails were awesome. We ran Damnation Alley, Mason Jar and Lion's Den. We were on several other easier trails but those were the big three we ran. There were a total of 6 rigs and about 4 quads.

Carnage for the weekend:

The big body Bronco was on it's first trip and his front drive shaft came apart in the lower rock garden and broke the yoke. Terry put it back together and they caught up with us a little later

The XJ exploded a front Dana 30 u joint on Damnation Alley

The Toyota four Runner sculpted his passenger side to a new shape in Lion's Den.

I thought my only break of the day was going to be the end of my Hi Lft I snapped off in Lion's Den. I unfortunatly took a stupid hard line at a ledge on the way back to camp and snapped a rear axle shaft.

All in all we had an awsome time and I can't wait to get back there.

Here a some of shots of Lion's Den

Looks pretty sweet. I've been wanting to hit Lion's den, but the only time I've been there was on a Monday when everyone was ready to go home.

The entrance to Mason Jar can be a pain, but I remember the rest of it being fun. Haven't made it to Damnation alley yet. I should go with Terry. Sounds like he knows where all the good stuff is.

My Bronco should be ready in a month or so and I'm ready to go back!

Mason Jar was cool. I made the entrance and the first ledge pretty easily. I was denied the second bigger ledge and nearly layed it over a few times.

Damnation alley was fun too. I needed a little tug at the last ledge due to it being wet.

I pretty much walked right thru Lion's Den due to some excellent spotting by Terry. It was tough and will scratch your paint no matter what line you take. You will notice in the picture that I had to lay down the windshield. Most of the turns require leaning into the rock wall and sliding past it. Running it was definetly the highlight of the trip.

The trails are well marked and most of the tuffest obstacles have a bypass.

Hopefully Gary will post up a few pictures he took of the other obstacles.

Lion's Den is sweet. We got a couple of rigs (chopped XJ and bobbed Toy) through there last spring. I can't imagine taking a full bodied XJ through there.

I haven't seen Damnation Alley yet either. We'll have to check it out the next time down there.

I've got a while before I get there. I'm slowly heading that way, just fighting it kicking and screaming. The body gets a couple more waves every time out.
