Memorial day at Harlan

Postby broncomarc » Sun May 27, 2007 11:26 pm

Just got back from Harlan. Our impression was that we were a little disappointed. There were a few good obstacles, but most of it was fairly easy trails. I think it's going to take a few years to wear in and hopefully it'll get down to some good rock.

Saturday we hit the trails and were just trying to learn our way around. We bought trail maps, but there were some trails that were not on the map, and some that were not marked at an intersection. Sometimes we'd get to a point where there would be a lot of trails close together and it was hard to figure out which way to go. By Sat afternoon we started to learn our way around.

We ran into Droopy and Kim on the trail and went with them to the upper rock garden. (We also later ran into Jack Bettio, Wombat and others we recognized) This was a rock run that was a few hundred feet of tough rocky terrain right next to the main trail. There was one really tight squeeze that I think was called Can Opener. There were several competition class vehicles running thru here and most were making it (and a few trucks who weren't). Kim ran thru it with relative ease and impress everyone. There was another competitor with them (Mike Hale? Team 775) that also got thru it pretty easy. Mike managed to get on his side at the end of the garden. With the help of his spotter on a rope they were able to drive it back on it's wheels. I ran thru the first part (up to the can opener) on Sunday, but decided to bail out there.

Next we headed down to the middle rock garden. This was a rocky climb up the hill that turned out to be a lot of fun. I managed to make it all the way up with only a little trouble.

We went down to the lower rock garden which is really a set of rocky trails in one area. We tried a waterfall, but I got wedged in sideway and had Gary winch my rear over so I could back out of it. He tried it and got the right line. His pass side tire climbed the ledge and put his drivers side way in the air (Sandy has pics). He managed to drive up it, but needed the winch hooked up as a safety line. We went up a rocky creek bed from there that was pretty fun.

We started back up the hill to head out and tried a rock crawl next to the trail that was a couple hundred yards long. It looked very impressive, but turned out the be pretty easy. There wasn't a lot of gaps between the rocks. I clear the whole thing in 2-3 minutes and only had to back up in 1 spot. We headed out from there and back to camp.

Sunday morning, Kyle and Doug were trying to fix their rear u-joint that broke on Sat. They were having trouble getting some broken bolts out, so Gary and I went on our own.

We headed up the mountain and took some scenic trails. We hit a couple impressive overlooks. We got up to a trail called Mason Jar. It looked like it would be real fun. A steep hill with lots of large rocks. Reminded me a little of Schoolbus. But we opted against it because we wanted to get out early, and I still can't use my winch. We'll have to hit it next time. We hit some more scenic trails and headed out.

I only took scenery pics since I forgot my camera on Saturday. Sandy has some better shots to post. The first pic below is the new member's group photo for the newly reformed TKO Trailriders.

Here are a few pictures from our MEMORIAL DAY RIDE. I took almost 100 pictures, so we'll have a slide show at the meeting.

Here's one more (since you can only post 10 at a time). This is Marc in "Can Opener" - right before the can opener.

Maybe I shouldn't be that critical.. It's just that the trails were a little too easy. There weren't any great obstacles such as carb hill that we ran into. There was some good stuff there such as the rock gardens. I think it's worth going back. I think in time new obstacles should start appearing.
