New motor for the CJ

Postby ANDY » Sat Jan 10, 2015 4:32 pm

It's way past time to put a new motor in the CJ. I sold the quad so I have a little cash to finally do it. I am thinking about a 4.6 stroker. I have been looking at putting something together like this:

https://www.golenengineservice.com/engi ... -cj-engine

I can by all the parts from other sources and the long block from them for about $6500 total. They want about $8300 for the package setup and ready to go. That's just a bit too much. I can buy cheaper long blocks, a cheaper header and cheaper fuel injection to lower the $6500 price tag, but I really want to do this once and do it right. I could also just put a reworked 4.0 head on a new 258 block, use my existing fuel injection, modify my intake and buy a new header for about $4500. The only problem with his setup is performance. It will be better than stock but no where near 300 HP and I would still probably have the inherent idling and hesitation problems I have with the Howell fuel setup now.

Before you all scream SBC, I know I can do a junk yard small block for about $5000, but I there are several reasons I don't want to.

I really don't want a used engine.
My transmission is not set up for the newer all electronic engines.
My onboard air would not work.
My welder would not work.
My brand new aluminum radiator would be useless.
I like the torque of the straight six.
I like keeping it simple and keeping something I am already familiar with.

Any thoughts?

SBF !!! :-P

Looks like remanufactured 4.0's are going for around $1500-1800. Throw on a better FI system and call it good. For that kind of money, it the extra HP really worth it? Do you really need that kind of HP? I've got $1000 in my long block.

I don't need the HP, but a simple 258 swap of what I have would save me about $2k over what I am talking about and I will end up with maybe 150HP. Yea, $2K is a lot, but let's be realistic, we all like to deny how much we really spend on our rigs and $2K is a drop in the bucket over time. Your block was only a $1000. Try to find one for that now. I don't know of any remanufactured block for $1000. My 258 block I had put in about 12 years ago was only about $600. I got lucky and found a new one sitting in someone's garage.

The problem is the 4.0 block is not an exact swap. I have v belts so I need a crank with the long snout. I need a 4.0 block that is set up to fit my 258 configuration. There are only a handful of companies that build one and they are all about $2500-$3500. Once I decide which one, I need a header, Clifford intake (the only choice), fuel injection system and 4.0 valve cover. The only carryover parts are my oil pan, motor mounts, starter, distributer and front accessories. It adds up quick no matter what direction I go. The less expensive blocks like Titan and ATK might be ok, but I have read a fair number of negative reviews about there quality.

My last concern is piecing it all together then having a failure on something and destroying a brand new block. $$$$$ That is the single biggest reason I looked at Golen. They are expensive, but the engine will show up assembled, in running condition and ready to drop in. I wish I knew someone other than the web wheelers I read about that have done one to know if it was worth the $$$$ in the end. :banghead:

I finally found a motor this weekend and bought it. It is a 4.7 stroker motor that a guy had built and never put it in the Jeep. Marc and I went to Harlan this weekend to wheel but had a few problems with his Bronco. While he was surfing the net and calling to find for a new radiator, I was looking at Knoxville Craigslist for a motor. (I have been checking it and other areas around there for weeks) I found one, called the guy and two and half hours later we were in Pigeon Forge picking it up. :bounce2:

I am ordering a Fast EZ EFI setup, a header, an intake and other misc parts today. :jammin:

Terry has a lot to do. He is getting close though. He finished the radiator relocation yesterday and should have the new headlights in today. His next project is the new Fast EZ fuel injection setup then onto reinforcing the front fenders to the body.

Added a few more things to the list today:

Lokar kick down cable
Lokar throttle cable
Fast EZ throttle cable mount
Lokar pedal assembly

The Fast EZ Jeep manifold throttle cable/kick down mount didn't work with the Clifford intake. :banghead:
