Natural Bridge area

Postby ANDY » Sat Feb 26, 2011 1:19 pm

I have been in contact with a few people and received the following email. Please sign up and follow the boards. Looks like we need to be prepared to help out this year.

Dear potential Volunteer,

My name is Jeffrey Dozier and I am the Land Use Coordinator for The Daniel Boone National Forest (DBNF) for the Southern Four Wheel Drive Association (SFWDA). I am the author of the petition you signed indicating interest in a Highway Legal Vehicular Trail System in the DBNF near Slade, KY. Located at this link:http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/sandlick/

Thank you for your interest in this cause. It is time to organize. The USFS is developing a scoping notice which begins the process of deciding upon an action to take regarding the Sandlick/Bigbend Watershed project. Their goal is to "Improve water quality and reduce soil loss in riparian and rare areas by managing and maintaining the many open roads in the Sand Lick and Big Bend Watersheds." This could have many outcomes. We surely need to be organized and calculated in our efforts, hence the need to organize promptly.
I am sending this email for two reasons. First, I am building a volunteer database in order to show the public land managers how strongly we support sustainable access and to mobilize our support in the future. It shows the land managers we are willing to work for this cause in various ways including donations of time, skills, material, equipment, organizational skills, administration skills, and money. Also, building a volunteer database is a convenient way for me to communicate information to interested parties through an email list. This will assist in keeping everyone abreast of developments and future actions to fully support our cause. This will serve to keep the current issues accurate and timely.

If you are willing to volunteer and want to be added to the volunteer database, please reply to:

savesandlick@gmail.com

Please type Slade in the subject line.

Please include your name and preferred email address (if different from the one you replied from) along with any skills you possess.

Off-road Clubs or groups can send one email listing names and email addresses to streamline the building of this volunteer database.

Thank you for your time in helping to maintain sustainable access. Please feel free to pass this information to anyone who may wish to join. We will communicate in the near future, so please stay tuned. Here are some informational links on the topic as well as USFS links to help spread the knowledge.

Feel free to Email savesandlick@gmail.com with your name, email address if different, and any skills you may have along with any feedback for me. This is a big year for Sandlick.

Thank you once again,

Jeff Dozier

I can't think of a better area than Natural Bridge for Trailkeepers to spend some money on. Can we get some of the board members to contact Jeff?

Sounds like a great way to show real 4 wheel drive community support.

We have been in contact with Jeff in the past and while this is a great cause to work with I'm not sure at this time how much we can do.
Unfortunately we haven't had a lot of participation with TrailKeepers and had a poor turn out at the meeting in November.
We are in the process of scheduling a couple events this year but if participation doesn't increase, The TrailKeepers Foundation may cease to exist after this year.

I am well aware of the issues with Trailkeepers participation. The club events themselves have the lowest turnouts in years. With diesel getting close to $4.00 a gallon, I see even less people showing up for anything. My point is that there is a fair amount of money available in the Trailkeepers accounts. The Natural Bridge area has been enjoyed by every member of Trailkeepers for many years. If the organization is shut down, the money has to be spent somewhere. Why not think about it now and do somehting positive?

Put the word out about specific events, and that it is to save the trails and I would think people would show up.

You missed my point. I am sure Jeff will have no problem getting volunteers to show up to help save Natural Bridge. I am speaking about Trailkeepers events and club rides having low attendance.

True, but my point is that we can use it as a way to get some activity with trailkeepers.

I am guessing most of you received the email about the forestry service meeting this coming Tuesday. Is anybody thinking about going? It's the same night as our club meeting.

There were 50 people there for the meeting. The county was quite surprised. They seem to be very much on our side and willing to take a stand against the Forestry Service. They are going to prepare a formal request to keep the area open.
